Dr. S Y Quraishi was born in Delhi in 1947. He studied at the Anglo-Arabic School (est. 1692) and St Stephen’s College (est. 1881), both living monuments of the city. In 1971, he joined the Indian Administrative Service and served the Government of India and the State government of Haryana with distinction in several senior positions.
Dr. Quraishi brought to the Election Commission 35 years of distinguished work in the civil service, at both federal and state levels. Before joining the Commission, he was Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India.
Dr. Quraishi is known for his special contributions in the social sector reforms covering health, education, population, drug abuse, and civil society action. He has done extensive work in the fields of Gender, Women & Child Development, HIV/AIDS, Youth, and Adolescent issues. UN and other international organizations have availed his expertise in these areas as consultant and resource person on several occasions.
He has several books, articles and talks to his credit on issues related to democracy, elections, HIV AIDS and Family Planning, social marketing, women and child development and Youth.
His earlier works, composed in English, Hindi and Urdu, include Haryana Rediscovered: A Bibliographical Area Study, Hali: Kavi Ek Roop Anek and Hali: Kal Aaj Aur Kal.
